ANNOUNCING
THREE CAMBRIDGE-SPONSORED ICPI CERTIFICATION COURSES FOR 2006
Again this year, Cambridge Pavingstones continues to be a proud
sponsor of ICPI Certification Program in our market areas. Interlocking
Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) presents these practical 2-day courses
in an effort to promote the proper use and installation of concrete pavers.
Courses are designed to enhance the knowledge of individuals involved
in the construction of interlocking concrete pavements. Noted speakers
and educators will present the curriculum, which typically includes topics
such as basic contract law, job layout and installation, soil classification
and compaction, the use of laborsaving tools and lots more.
The ICPI Certified Concrete Paver Installer Program teaches industry standards
needed by owners and supervisors of paver contracting firms in this growing
business. Minimum standards, as established by ICPI, can even help experienced
installers rate their company’s performance in areas such as workmanship,
efficiency and profitability. Inside and outside sales personnel
in our Authorized Distributor Network are also urged to attend.
While today’s consumers expect installers of interlocking pavements
to be certified and many design professionals specify installation by
ICPI certified installers, it is equally important that our Authorized
Cambridge Distributors have an all-inclusive knowledge of relative products
and installation techniques when dealing with their contractor-customers.
Tuition for both days is $195.00 for ICPI members and $250.00 for non-members.
Contractors and distributors who will not be attending the course
are invited to the special Dinner Session on Wednesday where Cambridge
will introduce new 2006 products and our interactive “before &
after” imaging software. Industry experts will also discuss current
topics. For dinner reservations only, contact Lauren Conte
at Cambridge, 201.933.5000 ext. 27. The deadlines for dinner
reservations only are: 1/01/06 for Long Island, NY; 2/01/06 for NJ; and
1/08/06 for VA.

By Charles H. Gamarekian
Chairman/CEO Cambridge Pavers Inc.
It has been reported that Cambridge Distributors and contractors
are experiencing scuff marks on a few Cambridge 12-inch Bullnose
pavers after they are removed from the cube. Here’s why it
can happen: There are three bands to a cube of Bullnose that are
situated in an upright position. On one layer in the middle band
only, the rounded front side of the Bullnose paver touches the square
backside of the adjacent Bullnose paver. This can cause scuffmarks
on the noses during transportation, loading and unloading…
marring the otherwise smooth surfaces of Cambridge Pavingstones.
To remedy this problem, we are inserting a special Foam Protection
Sheet between the two surfaces of 12-inch Bullnose pavers situated
in the area where scuffing may occur. The goal here at Cambridge
Center is to always take a pro-active position especially when it
comes to quality assurance… after all, our reputation is built
on it. We apologize for any inconvenience previously caused by this
problem. (top) |

Cambridge Has The Joint Sand Stabilization Program
That’s Right For Any Need
By Steve Jones,
President PAVE TECH
SandLOCK is the only brand that offers both PREMIX and ADDITIVE.
These field-proven organic products are economical and better
environmental alternatives to chemical joint stabilizers. Ideal
for flexible and semi-rigid pavingstone systems, they form a natural
“glue” in the joints while preventing sand loss due
to wind, traffic and moisture. Unlike water-dispersed, polymer-based
stabilizers, the material in SandLOCK will not dilute. The absorbent
material — comprised of tiny sponge-like elements —
swells and binds to provide a greater resistance to washout. Only
minimal water infiltration is allowed through the joints. Water-based
polymers dissolve to form a paste compromising performance. The
sand may crack and wash out of the joints over time. Compare
these other features:
• Non-toxic and odorless… safe for use around
plants, animals and people.
• No harsh chemicals are needed prior to installation.
• Non-staining and will not alter the paver’s original
color.
• No surface residue remains if instructions are followed.
• Pavement is ready for traffic immediately.
• Remains flexible during thermal movement.
• Will not chip out or break apart from wear… any
moisture instantly heals cracks.
• Works in all climactic conditions… will not break
down from ultraviolet light.
• Reduces weed growth from wind blown germination and is
effective against ants.
Choose SandLOCK PREMIX
SandLOCK PREMIX is the only organic, premixed, structural joint
sand. Be especially cautious of low grade, low priced premixed
products that promise extra strength. Brands that cut costs by
reducing the additive ratio will not only under-perform, but may
not work… period.
SandLOCK PREMIX activates by flooding the surface with water…
no additional clean up is needed after setting. Save time …
no mixing on-site. Save labor… dry SandLOCK PREMIX sweeps
faster. Reduce risk… leave proper mixing ratios to PAVE
TECH, the industry experts. SandLOCK PREMIX is packaged in conveniently
sized 50 lb. bags. Bags must be stored in a dry area.
Structural sand with properly sized grains and gradation is critical
to optimum performance. PAVE TECH ensures that the sand used in
SandLOCK PREMIX is the absolute finest structural sand available
in the region.
Compare for yourself; conduct a Field Test using SandLOCK
PREMIX and another brand:
• Add a small amount of water to a competitor’s brand
of premixed stabilized sand and roll into the size of a meatball.
• If it is slimy on the outside of the ball, there is too
much additive in the premix and performance will be compromised.
• If you can poke the ball (as if it were the Pillsbury
Doughboy) without it cracking, the ratio of additive to sand is
correct. PREMIX has been tested to assure a perfect ratio every
time.
Choose SandLOCK ADDITIVE
Still the most economical method, SandLOCK ADDITIVE is an ideal
choice when mixing a joint sand stabilizer with joint sand on
the job site. SandLOCK ADDITIVE is the only organic additive on
the market today. It is available in 2- and 25 lb. pails. Compaction
and stabilization are both done at once. After pavers are installed,
simply mix approximately 3 – 4 pounds of SandLOCK ADDITIVE
for every 100 pounds of joint sand, then sweep, compact and activate
by flooding with water after all material is swept clean from
the surface. Allow to set. No additional steps are required.

How
To Build Square Corners, Finished End Walls And Fixed Length Walls
With MaytRx® Double-Sided, Multi-Face Wall Units
Rather than having to purchase corner units separately as with other
wall systems, contractors can create corners from standard wall
stones. Along with its finished double-sides and five faces, Cambridge
MaytRx offers real value-added advantages. The five stone system
is designed to make building square corners and finished ends as
easy as splitting a MaytRx A, B or Y stone. First, split each of
these wall stones from front to back along the groove that is provided
on the top. Retaining wall adhesive should be used
on corners.
Use a block splitter capable of cutting a concrete product that
is 6 inches high. The “new” face will have the same
texture as the MaytRx Split Face. Hammering on the new face will
“distress” the face to match MaytRx Renaissance. Splitting
with a hammer and a mason chisel is an alternative but will require
more time and the split will not be as precise. Saw cutting is another
option for making half stones but should only be used if the cut
stone is to be placed within the wall — not on ends, corners
or columns because the texture of the new face will not match the
rest of the facing on the wall.
To achieve a finished face on both sides of the square corner or
on the end of the wall, set any of six wall stone pieces (two each
from stones A, B, and Y) at the corner or end. Start each layer,
after the base course, at the square corner or end and build away
from this point.
Fixed length walls are special applications that have two square
corners or a square corner and a fixed end. The wall between the
two ends must be of a fixed length for each layer. For each layer
on a fixed length wall, start at both a square corner and finished
end and build toward the middle.
If the full or split wall stones do not exactly fit the final gap
in the layer, there are two alternatives to consider. The first
alternative is to change one of the wall stones adjacent to the
gap so that the new gap will be the size of one of the faces of
an A, B, X or Y MaytRx wall stone or one of the six half wall stones.
The second alternative is to measure the gap and split or saw cut
a piece off a MaytRx wall stone to fit the gap exactly. Splitting
a filler wall stone to 2 inches wide or less is difficult. A thin
filler wall stone will often break before it is set. If the gap
is 2 inches or less, change one of the wall stones on one side of
the gap to make it at least 3 inches wide. (top)

School For Advanced Segmental Paving Opens Its Doors
Located at the PAVE TECH Training Center in Franksville, Wisconsin,
the new “School for Advanced Segmental Paving” is
the first of its kind in North America. The 1000 sq. ft. multimedia
conference/training room was completed at the beginning of April,
and the first meeting of the Founding Board members was held on
April 16, 2005. “We are pleased to announce that both the
facility and the meeting exceeded our expectations,” reported
Steve Jones, PAVE TECH’s president. Progress is continuing
on the program, which will provide indoor, hands-on training and
educational opportunities mainly for skilled foremen, superintendents
and field oriented company owners. A portion of PAVE TECH’s
14,000 sq. ft. warehouse expansion will be set-up specifically
for hands-on work.

“We are very proud of our long association
with PAVE TECH,” said Charles Gamarekian on behalf of Cambridge,
“and I’m pleased to have been asked to chair the Training
Center’s Scholarship and Fundraising Program.”
The curriculum is tailored to experienced, professional pavingstone
contractors and not designed for basic training. New paver installers
are encouraged to refer to the “Vocational Student Training
Manual” published by PAVE TECH and attend Cambridge-sponsored
ICPI Installer Programs.
PAVE TECH is currently accepting sponsors and classes will be
scheduled primarily off-season during winter months starting in
December 2005. Please check www.pavetech.com/school.htm often

The
Twelve Value-Added PREMIUMS of Cambridge MaytRx Double-Sided,
Multi-Face Wall Systems
By Paul Adam, C.E.,
Inventor of MaytRx® Wall System
1. Corners are made by splitting existing units
and therefore, the need to order and store additional pallets
containing corner units is eliminated. This is an important PREMIUM
for stocking and non-stocking Cambridge Distributors.
Tell contractors how integrated corners also assure uniformity
of color throughout the finished wall.
2. Cambridge Pavingstone color matching is a
big PREMIUM for stocking Cambridge distributors. Tell contractors
how easy it is to offer their customers a truly finished look
— a wall system that actually matches the pavers.
3. Double sides are an important PREMIUM because
of the many design
possibilities not available with single-sided walls. Tell contractors
that they get
PREMIUM value with little or no premium pricing over single walls.
4. MaytRx double-sided capstones can also be used as caps
for Cambridge Pyzique®. This is an important PREMIUM
even if you don’t buy or stock the entire MaytRx system.
Tell contractors to consider this as an option
when building Cambridge Pyzique walls.
5. All four shapes (offering five face sizes) are conveniently
packaged on the same pallet. This important PREMIUM conserves
yard space and makes ordering a lot easier. Tell contractors how
the building process is accelerated because the installer easily
accesses all four shapes used in the system.
6. MaytRx Caps can be soldiered in a freestanding wall
without cutting. Soldiering is achieved by sporadically
setting some of the wall stones vertically (on end). This feature
creates another PREMIUM value. Tell contractors how this can save
time because cutting is not necessary.
7. If needed, the MaytRx “A” Wall Stone shape
and Cap Stone can be soldiered in a landscaping wall
for a real PREMIUM appearance. Note also that the MaytRx Cap Stone
is 11 in. deep while other MaytRx wall stones are 10 in. deep.
Tell contractors how unique placements such as these can add extra
dimension and more of the look of a natural stonewall.
8. The sides of MaytRx Wall Stones are manufactured with
a smooth machine finish for a tight fit. Tell contractors
how this PREMIUM can clinch a sale with customers who prefer a
system that does not allow daylight to be seen between the butting
points of two wall stones.
9. MaytRx Wall Systems offer two textures – Split
Face and Renaissance – in a large variety of colors.
Tell contractors that this PREMIUM choice is hard to find in other
brands.
10. Cambridge offers free help in pre-bid engineered walls
and engineering referrals for stamped drawings. This
PREMIUM removes the fear often connected with selling engineered
walls. Tell contractors that it is possible to get larger type
wall projects without liability or hassle.
11. Cambridge transports Cambridge MaytRx Wall Stones
on the same truck as Cambridge Pavingstones — a
PREMIUM that translates to efficient logistics and maximum use
of space on trailers. This is a PREMIUM for smaller dealers. Tell
contractors how this helps keep MaytRx competitively priced.
12. As the inventor of the MaytRx Wall System, I am available
for technical questions — almost 24/7. Tell contractors
how this PREMIUM value that provides straight answers and fast
solutions, is also available to them by calling Paul Adam at the
MaytRx Hotline: 515.720.8601. (top)
