BECOMING ICPI CERTIFIED PAYS OFF FOR CAMBRIDGE DISTRIBUTORS AND THEIR PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTOR-CUSTOMERS
In an effort to promote the proper use and installation of concrete pavers, The Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) presents practical 2-day courses designed to enhance the skill and knowledge of individuals involved in the construction of interlocking concrete pavements. Cambridge Pavingstones continues to be a proud sponsor of ICPI certification courses in our market areas. Noted speakers and educators present the curriculum, which typically includes basic contract law, job layout and installation, soil classification and compaction, the use of laborsaving tools and lots more.

The ICPI Certified Concrete Paver Installer Program teaches industry standards needed by owners and supervisors of paver contracting firms in this growing business. However there is another segment of the industry that should not be overlooked — the inside and outside sales personnel of our authorized distributor network. Why? When dealing with the public it is important — especially with professional pavingstone contractor-customers — that Cambridge Distributors instill confidence supported by an all-inclusive knowledge of relative products and installation techniques.

What better way than to have an inside and outside sales/customer service team on hand that is ICPI Certified!

Certification can be a powerful marketing tool to your customers by further establishing your credibility. The inherent value of this distinction also transfers over when recommending Cambridge Pavingstones over other brands.

How impressive would it be to display a number of qualifications certificates for all of your contractor-customers to see? And ICPI will reinforce your knowledge by updating your staff through technical literature, specifications guides, marketing support, Web site listings and press releases.

ICPI certified Cambridge Distributors can assist their contractor-customers by helping them meet and exceed industry standards and also reduce costs and eliminate costly callbacks. Cambridge Distributors should also encourage their contractor-customers to become ICPI Certified Installers. Today’s consumers expect trades people, including installers of interlocking pavements, to be certified. And many design professionals specify installation by ICPI certified installers. Minimum standards, as established by ICPI, can even help experienced installers rate their company’s performance in areas such as workmanship, efficiency and profitability.

Ask your Cambridge Sales Specialist for more information on how you can leverage this powerful recognition to your advantage. (top)

An important upcoming expansion here at the
Cambridge Center in New Jersey

By Charles H. Gamarekian
Chairman/CEO Cambridge Pavers Inc.

In May of this year, 5-plus acres of property became available continuous to the area of our manufacturing complex where Plant 2 is situated. With the primary intention to designate it for much needed additional inventory storage, we immediately began negotiations with the owner and we have now acquired the tract, which includes a 3,000-square-foot office building.

By May, 2.4 million square feet of Cambridge Pavingstones were on the ground. As the season progressed, many of our distributors seized opportunities to increase total orders. Regretfully, due to issues resulting from our unprecedented growth, our inventory management systems were strained beyond our control. As a result, many orders were delayed.

With the new storage area useable by April 2005, we will be able to inventory up to 6 million square feet of Cambridge Pavingstones — ready for transport to every corner of our market.

But the additional mega-storage area will not achieve the total solution that we desire. We realize that our workforce of trained paver specialists also needs to be enhanced. By January of 2005, Cambridge will be supplementing the team at Cambridge Center with additional customer service representatives, inventory control specialists and the appointment of a new position — transportation director. This person’s full attention will be on fulfilling your transportation needs. In addition, our expansion plans will soon focus on the development of another production facility to further meet the growing demands for Cambridge Pavingstones — the superior concrete paver brand. As we near the end of 2004, I thank all of you for your patience and support. My sincere wishes go out to you and your families for a happy and healthy holiday season. Please remember to support our troops especially during this time of year. (top)

Please note: broadcast television, cable television and radio advertising must be placed through CDA Media in order to be rewarded at the full 100%. Television and radio advertising placed directly by a Cambridge Distributor with the media will now be credited at only 50%. This change in terms and conditions is designed to encourage distributors to avail themselves of the media savvy of our media buyers and applies only to television and radio advertising. All advertising material must meet previous guidelines. In addition to earning 100% reimbursement, placing media through CDA will offer these added benefits:

Better cash flow. Because CDA deals directly with the Cambridge Co-Op Department, you are not required to pay media costs upfront (you need only authorize the schedule and budget before the advertising is placed). Your account will be accurately credited in accordance with the media buy.
Improved time management. Using our professional
media buyers will free up your time and/or that of your
employees. CDA will do most of the work for
you (paperwork, distribution of ad material,
affidavits, etc.)
More efficiency. CDA’s experience will assure that your
media schedule will deliver optimum exposure to your
target market (both geographically and
demographically).
If you have any questions or concerns, contact your Cambridge Sales Specialist as soon as possible.

There are no fees or other added costs — the expertise of our media buyers is at your disposal (in addition to the added efficiency, you may even realize a savings to your budget). And yes, you do have freedom of choice. CDA will send you a Media Questionnaire to learn about your media preferences and prior experiences before developing your custom media plan (and you can always alter a proposed schedule to your liking).

Before placing your 2005 TV and radio schedule, contact Charlie Dente at CDA — 201.670.0116.

Do Not Contract 2005 TV And Radio Co-Op Advertising Before Reading This Change In Reimbursement Policy

As you know, your 2005 co-op funds began to accrue as of September 1, 2004 and eligible advertising must be placed between April 1 and August 31, 2005. However, a change in the Cambridge Co-Op Advertising Reward Program will now afford you the opportunity to profit from the assistance of our authorized, professional media buyer — CDA Media. In concurrence with this, the Cambridge Co-Op Reward Program has been revised effective with all 2005 co-op advertising.

Protect The Dimpled Surface Of Cambridge RoundTable Pavingstones When Compacting
The unique embossed surface of Cambridge Pavingstones with ArmorTec from The RoundTable Collection has made this group of pavers a popular choice. However during the final stages of compaction, the unmistakable surface beauty can be compromised by scuffmarks — especially when stone dust is used in lieu of washed C-33 sand for the leveling course.

Here’s why:
In addition to centrifugal force, frequency — the number of times the plate exerts force onto the surface — is important in compaction. A higher frequency is typically used in conjunction with interlocking pavement projects. When pavers are compacted into coarse C-33 sand, they seat properly into the bed. The sand is automatically pushed upwards into the joints for optimum interlock. Conversely, when pavers are compacted on top of stone dust — a much harder material not recommended by industry experts — they tend to vibrate back off of the bed. The motion of the plate against the surface caused by this vibration feedback can be too abrasive and cause unsightly marring (a.k.a. the “white cap effect”) on high spots of textured pavers such as the embossed shapes from The Cambridge RoundTable Collection. Sometimes the scuffs will disappear over time, but most often they remain visible on the pavers.

Protective Solutions
If you are a contractor who insists on using stone dust or just feels more confident with added surface protection, there are a couple of ways to shield the surface of the pavers against marring. One measure is to place a piece of plywood between the plate and the pavement to be compacted. Obviously, this task can be quite cumbersome especially on larger projects. A better solution is to attach a protective mat to the underside of the plate compactor. Protective mats are available options on most professional-grade plate compactors suited for interlocking concrete pavements. However, every compactor is different and therefore, mats are usually designed specifically for each model.

For example, a vulcolan mat is an option on Bomag’s popular line of plate compactors. The mat offers quick-fit protection on their single direction vibratory plates. The SurfaceSAVER 90 from PAVE TECH, an alternative to conventional protective mats, is a universal roller attachment that can be used with most brands of compactors on the market today. Its rigid frame allows the force to be transmitted through three 4” diameter rollers to the pavers. Because the roller attachment reduces the compactor’s amplitude to zero, the compactor will no longer travel forward on its own. The operator will need to push or pull the machine across the surface. This advantage will let the operator move forward or backward and also compact easier in tight corners.

Choose the solution that’s right for you. For more information, contact your Authorized Cambridge Distributor or Cambridge Sales Specialist.

Spring Ahead, Don’t Fall Behind

It Pays To Install Base Materials In Slow Months
Select 4 or 5 projects that are scheduled for spring and can afford to sit idle for a while. If you act before the ground freezes, you can beat the spring rush by excavating and putting in the base now. You may even get lucky enough to find a week in the winter when temperatures are on the mild

Fall Clean-Up Time Also Presents An Opportunity For Other Profitable Add-Ons
Autumn is an ideal time to clean pavers. For customers who may like a non-slip sheen on their pavers, recommend the application of PaverGUARD, a sealer that is specially formulated for concrete pavers. Remember, pavers and joints must be dry — also be sure that rain is not expected in the next twelve hours. Do not apply PaverGUARD if the temperature is below 45 degrees (7c) and use PaverPREP before sealing. When using PaverPREP, the temperature must be above freezing. More application guides can be found at www.pavetech.com/ paveChem/index.shtml. Slow months are also a good time to suggest finishing touches to your completed projects. Paver Lights from Cambridge can offer demarcation and illumination for beautification and safety on patios, driveways, and walkways as well as around pools. They are sold individually or in kits that include wire and transformer.

After blowing off walkways and patios, ask your customer to consider Cambridge ColorSweep Pigmented Joint Sand in lieu of uncolored sand as part of your fall maintenance program.

Remember, good ideas are always in season. Ask your Authorized Cambridge Distributor or Cambridge Sales Specialist for more information.

Probst SandPULL 5 & 8 From PAVE TECH —
A Solution For Sand Screeding Problems

To achieve optimum production and avoid back pain, we know that it’s best not to work on your hands and knees when screeding bedding sand. First of all, kneeling on pavers that are placed but not compacted can cause them to dislodge and shift. Second, caution should always be taken to reduce the chance of back injury to the worker.

How about this scenario? Have you ever sorted through a stack of 2 x 4’s at the lumberyard searching for one with the straightest edge? Did you return to the job site only to find that it was warped? Were you then forced to run the crooked board across the pipe rails hoping to achieve the most level laying surface possible? Did you push down on the 2 x 4 and cause it to flex resulting in a bed that was not completely level… and those dreaded birdbaths in your finished pavement?

I have good news! The Probst SandPULL Series offers the right choice of equipment to solve your sand screeding problems. Both the SandPULL 5 (5” wide) and SandPULL 8 (8” wide) are safe, very efficient, and designed for comfort.

Without bending down and using existing screed rails, edge restraints or curbing, you can screed much faster and with more accuracy than by hand. The three dimensional handle allows the operator to adjust the angle of the profile towards the screed rails. The operator relies only on body weight and leg muscles to exert the necessary force in every position. By moving the handle to the other side, the operator can also screed in both directions.
