Cambridge Sales Specialists Spearhead The Forming Of Local ICPI Chapter

The Interlocking Concrete
Pavement Institute (ICPI) — a non-profit trade association whose mission is to increase the use and proper installation of segmental concrete pavement systems in North America — offers local chapters as a membership option for contractors, producers and suppliers interested in participating at a local level. Local chapters are chartered by ICPI and all chapter members are ICPI members. These chapters provide more focused new business opportunities in addition to a convenient training resource.

Elected Officers of ICPI Northern Mid-Atlantic chapter are: distributor Ben Reid of Luck Stone in Richmond, VA as Vice President; contractor Kent Deeben of Paving Stones, Inc. in Leesburg, VA as Treasurer; and contractor John Sites of Earthtones in Charlottesville, VA as Secretary.

“Our intention is to offer continuing opportunities for training every quarter through ICPI Certification Programs as well as other enhanced training sessions on a periodic basis,” added Bob. “Knowledge cultivates positive consumer awareness by assuring quality installations.”

The ICPI Executive Committee approved the ICPI North Jersey Chapter in formation on May 13, 2005. (top)

If you are interested in the formation of an ICPI chapter for New York City’s five boroughs and Long Island’s Suffolk and Nassau Counties, contact Cambridge Sales Specialists Charlie Tesauro at 631.433.9911 or by e-mail at ctesauro@optonline.net. And Improved For 2005

Cambridge Sales Specialist

Our new Color Sampler has been expanded from 24 to 33 individual
2” x 3 1/2” mini-pages and now contains color swatches in every solid and blended shade from collections with ArmorTec™ and also crafted with EuroTec.™ You will also find the shades of Cambridge ColorSweep Pigmented Joint Sand as well as other helpful sales aids. For easier organization and use, the chain has been replaced with a post and screw binding to hold the mini-pages together in a book form while allowing swatches to swing out individually for review.

Although we have made every attempt to represent the colors as accurately as possible, final selections should be made from actual pavingstone samples. A Cambridge Pavingstones Mini Color Sampler and samples of pavers in any standard Cambridge Solid or Blend can be obtained from your Authorized Cambridge Distributor.

How To Calculate The Number Of Cambridge MaytRx® And Pyzique® Wall Units Needed To Build A Circle

This chart will help you determine the number of MaytRx Wall Units you will need to make simple round circles.
As the popularity of our new Cambridge MaytRx and Pyzique Double-Sided Wall Systems gain momentum, questions are arising with regard to specific designs and applications. For example, contractors want to know how to determine the number of wall units used to make simple round circles. In this edition of Cambridge Campus, I will attempt to simplify the formulas.

Using Cambridge MaytRx
There are four basic MaytRx shapes designated A, B, X and Y (see drawing). The double-sided, trapezoid-shaped “B” and “X” units are used to create circles. The “X” unit has an 8 inch face on one side and a 4 inch face on the opposite side. The “B” unit has opposing 10 inch and 6 inch faces. Essentially, sixteen MaytRx Split Face or Renaissance Wall Units make a circle. The sizes of the inside and outside diameters are determined by which shapes are used. Using all “X” units will result in the smallest inside diameter (hole of the donut) — approximately 20 inches with an outside diameter of around 40 inches. To increase the diameter, use a combination of “B” and “X” units or all “B” units (see chart). The width of the donut itself is always 10 inches (the depth of any MaytRx shape). Remember, that all four shapes (A, B, X and Y) are packaged on the same pallet. As a result, you will have leftover shapes to contend with after your circle layout is completed. Plan to use them in other aspects of the project.
Caps in Split Face and Renaissance styles are available and can be easily cut to a desired shape to finish off the top of the circle.
Build circles up to 3 feet high. For higher straight or curved walls, geogrid and pins are necessary.

Shown above: An elevated, circular stone fire pit and barbeque with fire ring insert and dual opposing cooking grates.
Using Cambridge Pyzique
Our Cambridge Pyzique Wall is also double-sided and trapezoid-shaped. The long face of a Cambridge Pyzique Wall Unit measures 11 inches wide and the short face measures 7 inches. Units are 9 inches deep. Fourteen Cambridge Pyzique Split Face or Renaissance Wall Units will make a perfect circle with an approximate 32-inch inside diameter.

A Cambridge Pyzique circle offers many possibilities for decorative and functional landscaping as well as a perfect fit for our Pyzique Double Grill BBQ Ring. When installing a Cambridge BBQ Ring, the lip of the ring will rest perfectly on the top course of the circle. The ring is 8 inches deep and is designed to protect the wall units from heat generated by the fire. The center should be filled with clean, porous rock fill and topped off with pea gravel for the burn surface.

Pavingstone Production

Achieving Optimum Lock-up
This final article in the series concerns one of the most critical phases of the installation process — final compaction. The natural tendency is to fill the joints as quickly as possible. But without proper “lock-up”, there will not be an “Interlocking” pavement system. Remember, pavingstones do not interlock because of the pattern and shapes but due to proper installation.

We know that pavingstones are set in sand. Driving sand down into the joints after the initial compaction of the pavers and before using sweep sand is a critical step in locking the system. Using a joint sand stabilizer is not enough because the sand will work its way down (much like sand in an hourglass) but may not adequately fill the joints — particularly gaps left by spacer bars.

Experts recommend washed ASTM C-33 coarse sand for both leveling and sweeping into the joints. Play sand, polymeric sand and spray-on joint stabilizers will not lock the joints. If the C-33 coarse sand is not sufficiently driven down, excessive water absorption in the base will occur. To avoid system failure, there should be less than 5% water absorption. A water-activated, joint sand stabilizer such as SandLock from Cambridge can be added to the sand before sweeping it into the joints.

To ensure that your project is properly compacted, consider the PaverPacker50 Plate Compactor. The broad surface width and narrow depth are designed to move the plate at a much faster rate than typical compactors. The force is also more concentrated. Using C-33 coarse sand may take a bit longer but the PaverPacker50 from PAVE TECH can shorten the process. (top)

Cambridge Display Racks
Offer Multiple Uses

If you are a distributor looking for a great-looking backdrop for an upcoming trade and home show booth, consider using multiple Cambridge Outdoor Display Racks. Your exhibit will attract attendees to get a close look at actual shapes, patterns and colors. Each rack will hold 24 sq. ft. of Cambridge Pavingstones and is designed to display popular shapes like 6 x 6 and 6 x 9 without making cuts. The built-in header provides excellent brand identification and distinguishes you as an Authorized Cambridge Distributor — the only source for Cambridge

Pavingstones.

Exhibiting at a spring home show is Cambridge Distributor Bud Wenzler of Goodman's
Hardware, Teaneck, NJ.

Plan your display in advance. Bring an array of different colors and styles. It’s easy to label the pavers that you are showing too. Identify products on cards that can be folded and inserted into open joints. Or print on adhesive back labels. Ask the show organizers for attachable light fixtures to accent your presentation.

A table cover is also obtainable from your Cambridge Sales Specialist. In addition to plenty of business cards, be sure to bring along color boards, Cambridge DesignScaping Ideas brochures and extra loose pavingstone samples.

When using display racks at your yard, here are a few tips:
1) Place outdoor display racks near the road or entranceway so that they are visible to traffic passing your location. Place racks back-to-back so they can be seen from two directions; 2) Carefully plan your display(s) to include new Cambridge shapes and colors, products that you have in-stock and/or a sampling of the entire Cambridge line-up; 3) Use attention-grabbing patterns and colors; 4) For customers who may like a non-slip sheen, seal some pavers with Paver Guard; and 4) Freshen up your display by changing the content at least twice a season. Modified Herringbone Pattern Offers Curb Appeal & Optimum Interlock
Herringbone has been long recognized as the ideal pattern for vehicular applications. If you think a herringbone pattern is ordinary, think again. Take a close look at this modified herringbone “I” pattern placed at 45 degrees. The unique pattern offers an interesting design approach as well as optimum interlock advantages especially on a wide driveway such as this. For a contemporary feeling, the contractor applied two coats of sealer to accomplish a subtle, non-slip sheen. (top)
